Gorger opened his mouth and bit heavily into her neck. At the last second, she attempted to twist away, so he missed her jugular vein. Blood poured between his teeth in little rivers and was absorbed into his dry, dry mouth.
A pair of Clementine's phantom limbs materialized and wedged themselves between his upper and lower jaw. She pried him loose, and with a cry of,
"Open Wide!"
snapped his lower jaw free.
He backed off, jaw dangling crazily. With a series of loud cracks, it was back in place.
Four more spider legs emerged and stabbed at his form. He twisted sideways and barrel rolled into the air, landing on one foot.
Etoile, heedless of her injury, palmed the floor in front of her and eight more darkness limbs sprang forth from the ground in her latest effort to nail Gorger to the wall.
He pirouetted back into the air and began to run along the length of the extended limbs towards Etoile.
As he drew near, he cocked back his fist, suffusing it with a red glow.
"FARUKON P-"
Etoile cold-cocked him in the face and he hit the floor rolling.
"OOWAAAALLH!!"
He rolled to a stop.
"Hell with this."
He leapt to his feet and began to stride forward. Multiple limbs knifed through the air and penetrated his body, but he kept moving forward, only grimacing slightly to show he was in pain. At about the point he was starting to look like a pincushion and Etoile was starting to run out of limbs to throw at him...well, it would be more accurate to say she was running out of places to stick them, Gorger reached her.
"Here's mud in your eye!"
He kidney punched her. Then he kidney punched her again, in the other kidney.
Most of the legs retracted, leaving her with the standard eight, which she whirled in a circle at a blistering pace, knocking him back.
She began to spin faster and faster, eventually rising onto the tips of her toes, the black blades of her ancillary limbs propelling her like a deadly top. She began to move towards him. He scrambled to his feet and ran like hell.
She began to pick up speed as her extra legs revolved faster and faster. Gorger was running low on energy. Having taken so many hits recently, he knew he wouldn't be able to regenerate if he took another fatal attack from her. So on he ran.
Gorger zigzagged from side to side, causing Etoile to plow through the cathedral's various pillars and immovable fixtures like so much balsa wood under the influence of a buzz-saw.
Ahead, Gorger saw the entrance to the maze of corridors, separate from the more open worship area. And with it, a congregation of Redmen, their hooded heads bent and their knobbly hands clasped in prayer.
"Scramble!" he bellowed at them.
They raised their collective gaze and caught his.
They scrambled.
He overtook them quickly, grabbing up a few as if they were no more than wads of tissue paper.
Etoile eviscerated those too slow to duck down skinny side alleys. The ones Gorger grabbed up were tossed behind him like caltrops, which were also eviscerated.
Eventually, after many twists and turns and after Etoile cut a quite a few corners, haha, Gorger reached a huge pair of black double doors. He covered his head with his arms and jumped forward, leaving a Gorger-sized hole in them. He front flipped and landed on his feet outside.
He took a look at his surroundings. He was in the area surrounding the Cathedral. It was a graveyard. The headstones were numerous and varied in shape and size, but time or who-knew-what had worn away their inscriptions.
The cathedral itself was massive when viewed from the outside. A white behemoth crawling with ebony gargoyles from the top to the bottom, each set with precious ruby eyes.
The sky had an orange moon in it, shot with lines of red. The stars, when visible, were also rather hot-looking, not at all like the dead ones back home, gently cooling in the morgue while their rays outlasted them for billions of light years.
He collapsed against one of the headstones.
"I THINK...I LOST HER," he grated abrasively.
As if on cue, a high pitched whining keen resolved into a thunderous smash, signaling that Etoile the spinning top had met the door, and that the conversation had been explosive.
He staggered back onto his feet and set off.
"GOTTA FIND...SOME MORE FOOD."
Etoile was gaining much more quickly this time. Gorger was barely tangible. He was so transparent that his core of being was practically visible, a throbbing veiny darkness at the center of his abdomen.
Feeding on Etoile again was out of the question. For now anyway. He'd need to kill her first. Get her to hold still.
He needed to find some more Redmen.
He ducked between a cluster of angel statues and hopped up onto a mausoleum, not caring that this silhouetted him against the sky.
Using his high ground, he attempted to see if...
Yes, there, that might be-
Abruptly, Gorger's perch seemed to be eroding under him. He jumped off just as Etoile reached the point where her spinning limbs could not pull out. He dashed off towards what he hoped was more Redmen.
To his glee, it was.
Before any of them could cry out, he feasted on them, engulfing several whole with the personal gravity of his mouth. The rest ran. He gave chase, as much to put distance between him and Etoile as to sate his hunger.
The Dark Maiden rounded the corner and sped closer. Gorger gave some thought to using the Redmen to slow her down again, but then he remembered that she had just diced them up. An idea occurred to him.
He drew level with a Redman, snapped its kneecap and crushed its foot with two well-aimed kicks. Then he kept running.
Predictably, the Redman fell down, and when Etoile passed over it, it was sucked upward into the whirling apparatus of her phantom limbs, gumming up the works from inside as it was torn apart viscerally.
Etoile's spinning shadow leg-claws ground to halt, held in place by the sticky substance of the Redman's death throes. And without the centrifugal force of the spin, she lost her balance.
"YEEEEAAAAAHHHHSSSS!!!!"
Gorger kicked off a grave stone and leapt high into the air.
"C'M OWWN!!"
Framed against the bloody grapefruit of the moon, Gorger's hands glowed red, he went into a pitcher position and, well, pitched.
The little red light screwed through the air, describing curly cues with a tail of neon. It connected with Etoile's nose in a dainty fashion, and exploded in a horrifying one.
The smoke cleared to reveal the broken body of-
Gorger landed, feet making small craters in the earth.
-Not Etoile anymore. He gripped her chin and held up her head for inspection. He forced open her eyes. The shadow, whatever had constituted Etoile, had fled, gone back to the inner recesses of Clementine's mind. No more than a hint again. And the smell was back.
He scowled and grimaced at the same time.
The smell of dreams.
When she spoke, it was barely above a whisper.
"My ribs...I can feel...I can feel them. They're on fire."
Gorger cocked his head to one side thoughtfully.
"Well, yes. Her influence on you has faded. For the moment."
Her eyes focused on him.
"You!" she choked out.
"I'll not let you touch me again."
She struggled feebly in his grip while he just looked at her blankly.
"Oh, just give up already. Just give up and die, please?"
She began to sob quietly.
"I can't...Allen...I have to win...they'll kill..."
Gorger rolled his eyes, insofar as that was possible without any points of definition on the orbs themselves.
"See, the thing about that is, I don't care. I have a purpose, an objective. I want you dead. I want every living thing dead."
He took a few unnecessary breaths. This was exhilarating. He was realizing his destiny, here and now. He'd always felt it, but now he was putting words to it.
"I mean, what if I die? I don't want any part of the ineffable blackness stuff. I won't touch that. Not again. Not ever. That's why I don't care about you and it's why I didn't care about the dark maiden."
He leaned in closer.
"I can sense that eating you, well not you, you're the useless bit, but HER, eating her will erase my fear, erase my pain. And now, I've been waiting to say this since we met."
He paused for dramatic effect.
"CLEMENTINE I'M GOING TO EAT YOU!"
She clenched her jaw and her features hardened.
"Eat this."
A limb materialized and rammed itself down Gorger's throat.
Clementine collapsed back and rubbed the tears from her eyes. It was agony to move, but she thought she might be able to-
There was a crunch.
Gorger bit though the hard enamel of the leg like a fisherman shelling a crab.
He continued to munch down the limb until he reached Clementine proper, at which point, he slowed down.
He wanted to enjoy himself after all.
When it was done, he gyrated his neck back and forth, and looked up with new darkness in his eyes.
"ALL THAT ANCIENT KNOWLEDGE."
Blip bloop blip.
Three round red gems appeared on his forehead above his left eyebrow.
"ALL THAT POWER."
Bloop blip bloop.
Three round red gems appeared on his forehead above his right eyebrow.
He smiled.
"Groovy."
His head snapped around. The bell atop the cathedral was ringing.

Faye was revolted by what she saw. But she couldn't disobey master Nightmare's orders. She couldn't kill this thing.
...
But maybe she could make sure its next opponent didn't die.
She took wing.
